Smoke knows no cultural or language boundaries, and in the Bayless School District, where 40 percent of the residents are New Americans, YEA! students felt it was especially important to educate parents and community members about the ill effects of tobacco use. That’s why YEA! Media Makers from Bayless

who have helped out with YEA! productions in the past year translated PSAs produced by their English speaking peers from around the state into Spanish, Bosnian, and Vietnamese.

Under the supervision of their sponsor, Mike Hawkins, the students replaced the existing sound tracks of PSAs, produced in English, with voiceovers in their own native tongues. “The students worked hard to make sure the interpretations were correct,” Hawkins said.
“When the students finished, we called in bilingual middle and high school students whose native tongue matched each version to check for accuracy and inflection of dialect," Hawkins said.  YEA! produced over 700 CDs of the multi-lingual PSAs, which the YEA! Media Makers distributed to every non-English speaking Bayless parent with a few to spare for ethnic communities around the state. To see the multi-lingual PSAs, visit wwww.showmesmokefree.com.
